Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program
The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program at Salam Clinic has a multidisciplinary team of specialists who provide rehabilitative care to people with chronic pulmonary disease and their families. The team includes pulmonary physicians and respiratory therapists. Physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers and dietitians who have expertise in the care of patients with chronic pulmonary disease may also be called on as needed. The comprehensive evaluation, educational and exercise components are covered on an outpatient or inpatient basis.
Objectives of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program
The goals of the program are to improve the quality of life of individuals with chronic pulmonary disease by:
•Providing individuals with a better understanding of their disease
•Assisting individuals in developing methods to cope with their disease
•Promoting and maintaining improvement in physical capabilities
•Developing in individuals a perception of wellbeing
•Decreasing the number of hospitalizations
Eligibility for pulmonary rehabilitation
Any individuals who have a chronic pulmonary disease that affects their functional status and therefore their quality of life are candidates for pulmonary rehabilitation. Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary fibrosis or neuromuscular disease may benefit from participating in a pulmonary rehabilitation program.
An evaluation by a Salam Clinic pulmonary physician is required. Appointments can be made by calling 03224684368.
The Pulmonary Rehabilitation program has numerous components, which include but are not limited to the following:
•Education sessions discussing breathing techniques, disease processes, respiratory medications, oxygen therapy, exercise techniques
•Exercise reconditioning sessions
•Oxygen dosing (when appropriate)
•Nutrition education session
•Energy conservation techniques
•Individualized session to go over results of tests, program recommendations, exercise prescription, and to respond to questions
•Recommendations to physicians of any changes or additional tests deemed necessary, such as oxygen therapy, overnight oximetry, ABGs, medication changes
The typical length of a pulmonary rehabilitation program is 4 to 6 weeks, but for patients who aren't able to commit to that length of stay, we offer individual appointments. We can assist these patients in identifying a health care facility near their homes where they can complete a comprehensive pulmonary rehabilitation program. Local facilities may be provided with specific guidelines for a patient. We also require that facilities provide us with summaries of a patient's progress on a regular basis.
At Salam Clinic patients have the confidence and knowledge that comes from knowing their physicians are providing treatment options based on the very latest developments in medical science and technology.
